    My 115-Year Sole-mate - BATA

I am a self-confessed BATA shoes lover. Cos' it has been my favourite sole-mate since primary school days. Back at home, we call it "Buy And Throw Away". BATA isn't seen as an international shoe brand - more like a neighbourhood one. Seriously, I always had the impression that BATA comes from Thailand or Malaysia (Urgh... those were the manufacturing countries!). I would never imagine BATA being an European brand - and certainly not a brand that have lasted more than a hundred years!

BATA is named after its founder "Tomas Batá". It was founded back in 1894 - now Czech Republic (yes.. 8 years younger than Coka-Cola and 61 years older than McDonald's). Today, BATA can be found in over 50 countries and throughout its 115-year hertiage, it was estimated that BATA has produced more than 14 billions pairs of shoes. Impressive origin and marvelous heritage. I bet many of you didn't know this.

It is no wonder when BATA opened in Shanghai - an orindary pair of BATA business shoes can fetch up to RMB1,000 (SGD200!). The same pair back home in Singapore only cost SGD89. Perhaps BATA is going back to recognise its roots. Surely (for me), BATA Shoes are very affordable and comfortable. It has been my sole-mates over the last 20 years - walking me from school to home, pathing all my life adventures. I wore them during my graduation. I wore them into my new home. I wore it during my business-setup days. And I am still faithfully wearing them today.

Not just buy and throw away. More like buy and travel again.

    A Visit to "Long Island"長洲

Yesterday, the weather was good... little fog. So we decided went "island hoping" once more. This time, we went to Cheung Chau Island.

The ferry took us about 45 minutes at very little cost of HK22 per pax. We sat in the "Deluxe Deck" - Elkan ran out to the open deck with his binoculars. It was very windy and cold. As usual, sea-sick Mummy was meditating quietly - ignoring our pleas to sit out at the open deck.

Cheung Chau is a totally different island from what I have imagined. I thought of it as the "Pulau Ubin" of Hong Kong but it offers much more! It reminds me of Taiwan's 淡水 village. Cheung Chau is an old seatown of a population of 30,000. Despite its old settings, It is quite an interesting & lively place. There are lots to see, shop and eat. It is really a nice place to spend a weekend. No wonder there are many small temporary motel kiosks outside the ferry terminal. You can easily rent a room for less than HK600. (There is even a mini HSBC bank and Mcdonald right outside the ferry terminal.)

We spent 3 hour hiking around the small island (and twice, we have to look high and low for Tracy's urgent toilet request!). The beach is pretty narrow (but much cleaner than the one we saw at Discovery Bay) and we saw a couple of people wakeboarding and wind-surfing there. The over-publicised 3,000 year-old Rock Craving is an overstatement. It is small and isolated (not worth the hike to see).

This small town does have its own authentic and unique offerings (but limited) - like the "PingAn Buns" and "dried seafood". There is a small shop along the beach where you can find "Tornado Fried Potato Chip". Shopping is relatively cheap (compared with HK island) but there aren't a lot of "local products". A lot of the handicrafts shop carry products from Indonesia and Philippine. (Sigh, another example of Tourism Erosion - where a place loses its cultural authenticness to mainstream tourism).

Seafood is great - as good as what we had back home in Singapore. Especially in this cool weather, it is a great joy to dine in the open by the pier and watch the sunset. And it is an eye-opener for me, watching those "boat people" cooking and eating on their own boat-houses.

I do enjoy myself a lot here. It is a good getaway from the over-congested Hong Kong. And it is only 45-minute away from Central Pier. A nice and affordable place to chill out.

    A Very Beautiful Movie

The plot of this movie is so simple and beautiful. The screenplay is just so compelling, real and emotional. A heart-warming tale, the "Slumdog Millionaire" truly deserves its 10 Academy Awards nominations. And one Hindi movie that you shouldn't miss.

    Misty Weekend

I have never seen such a misty (note: not foggy) Hong Kong. What a perfect timely gift from Mother Nature! The thick mist appeared yesterday on Valentine's Day. This morning, the mist got thicker (and at some point, visibility was only 50m). This is the perfect settings for a dreamy, misty, romantic Valentine's Weekend.

    Breakfast Valentine

This morning, Felicia "made us" participate in a compulsory "Valentine Game". On Friday the 13th, Felicia texted a strange "teaser" sms to both Tracy and myself. We have to be at home from 10:30am to 11:30am (on 14th Feb) for a very special Valentine Surprise. How exciting!

At 10:30am sharp, Felicia setup the table with pancakes, honey, bananas, chocolate fudge, strawberries and other goodies. (mmm.. very kinky sweet and sticky stuff) - I was pretty nervous what she was going to play.... (Seriously, I think I watched too many naughty porn shows!)

"Today is Valentine's Day! And we are all going to play a simple game! I want all of you to make your own Valentine Pancake! There will be prizes for everyone!" she said.

The game is simple. (1) Design your own pancake. (2) Draw a lot and decide whose pancake you will be having for breakfast later. (3) Valentine Gift exchange. (4) Have lots of fun together!

Immediately, a few naughty ideas (example: "Banana Honey Thrusting Pancake" or "Pancake Boobs with Pinky Strawberry Nipples") came into my mind. But with Elkan around, I had to drop those ideas. We were given 20 minutes to "design and make" our own pancakes.

The worst part of the game was drawing lot to decide whose pancake we will be eating - seriously, none of us want to eat Elkan's messy creation! He was digging nose and poking his pancakes... We were quite disgusted looking at him assembling those pancakes. Yucky! (Thanks goodness! Fate has chosen Tracy to take the bullet for Felicia and me! Haaaa.. she ended up eating Elkan's very dirty creation!) Lucky me, I picked Felicia's beautiful pancakes! Elkan got mine and Felicia got Tracy's.

Check out our creations! It is not difficult to guess which is Elkan's masterpiece.

(Feli, thanks for making our 16th Valentine's Day so fun and memorable!)

    Jap Loser

Technology really change the way we live today. Unlike the old days, you see groups of old men gathering at coffee shops or parks playing chess and poker cards. Today, with the advancement of mobile technology, the youngsters in my generation can be playing chess, card games and even mahjong with any "strangers" out there in the cyberworld. Now with the new powerful iPhone, it allows me to play chess with anyone, anywhere in the world.

I have been playing this freeware "Reversi" for the last few days with strangers from all around the globe - UK, HK, Japan, China and even Dubai. We could chat and play the game at the same time. It is fun and challenging - as you never know who is the one playing on the other side (maybe it is a pretty hot chick or some 3-year old kid). But I also met a couple of assholes who quitted their games at half-point (as they kinda knew they were going to lose).

Today, I finally met the worst player (he is from Japan). At the end of our game (which I won), he wrote 2 rude messages to me and left the game (with just 1 more move to make). He wrote "f**k you" and the message above. I was not amused at all! (cos he left the game before I could reply!) If this is a game at the coffee shop and he displayed such rude attitude, I'm sure I am going to break his damn balls with my cup of kopi-see. Haaa.. but on the other hand, I may be playing with a small kid...

These new-tech game is good but the old way is better. At least those old folks at coffee shops are more "civilised and gentlemen" than these cybercraps! And there are plenty of face to face connection.

Our 1st "Meet The Parents" Session

This morning, Felicia and I attended our 1st "Meet The Parents" session at Elkan's school.

Since young, I have developed a phobia about such meetings. Even though this time the subject isn't me, I never like such session. Perhaps, I had been through too many "painful parents-teachers" meetings. And yes, I was the "big problem" back then in school. It was more like a session when my hopeless teachers poured out all their accumulated pain and helplessness to my poor mother (who paid them to complain shit about me). And yes, my mother lost face in school and I was caned for no reason again! (Bastard suppliers of canes! They must be happy with the soaring sales of canes - seriously our government should ban the sales of canes in Singapore! If they ban toy guns and hand-cuffs, there is no reason why canes are allowed to be on sales!)

Anyway, I was mentally prepared for todáy's meeting. I was expecting a session of negative comments and unconstructive feedback about my ultra-playful kid. And I told myself that this is a stupid formality...I should just attend and forget about those negative stuffs.

    I was wrong.

In fact, Elkan performed very well in his class. The teacher sang lots of praises of him in many areas - master of languages, motor-skills and maths. However, this is not the main focus of our session today. For me, it was a very emotional meeting.

The teacher showed us a piece of drawing which Elkan drew recently. (see photo above) She saw an aeroplane, a house and some people in his drawing. She asked Elkan to explain the story in his drawing.

In his narration, Elkan recited to his teacher how much he missed his poipoi and family... and mentioned about those times when Daddy was flying away for work. From his own words, his teacher was moved by those feelings Elkan expressed. In Elkan's mind, Daddy is always flying away... all his favourite aunties, uncles, friends and poipoi were far away...always an aeroplane-ride away. Elkan is only 4 yet his drawing attracted his teacher's attention so much that she put this as the main topic in our session today.

She wanted Felicia and I to know that Elkan is a boy of deep emotions and feelings - and every time Elkan came back from a family trip, he behaved differently. She can feel him suppressing his emotions inside and there were short moments of rebel and rejection. "At this very young age, your boy has been through quite a bit. He has a lot of feelings and he needs lots of love and comfort, I can see how much he loves and misses his family... Especially his poipoi."

The teacher showed us those notes that she wrote on his drawing. And when she was going thru each element in his drawing, my heart cried so bady. In fact, my eyes were wet. I can understand Elkan's feelings. My boy was just like me. Always concealing our feelings with lots of acts and pranks. Yet inside, we are very sentimental souls.

At that moment, I just don't know where to focus my teary eyes. Avoiding the teacher's eyes, I looked down at his drawing. I, the usual chatty advertising salesman - choked and remained very very speechless today.

I hate such session. But I do love my boy so so much.

    CAK is Here!

Within just 7 months, the number of unique visitors to Hong Kong has reached 40! Yesterday, we met up with our old friends - Karen, Charlie and their little boy, Alston. Despite staying at the other extreme end of New Territory (and with a very tired child), they came all the way and met us at the Peak at 9:30pm. Very touched by their efforts and sincerity... (I know they have very packed itineary). Charlie is a doting dad, carrying his tired boy and braved the chill Peak without his jacket (he put his only jacket on his boy). Karen was as hyper and crazy as Elkan. Throughout the 3-hour meeting, she and Elkan were screaming all the way from the Peak to downtown Central. They will be traveling to Macau tomorrow.. hopefully, we get to catch up for dinner before they fly off on Monday.
